About the School Leadership Team (SLT)

Since 1998, as mandated by the New York State Legislature, the NYC Department of Education established School Leadership Teams (SLT) in every one of its 1100+ elementary, middle, and high schools. SLT’s are comprised of 17 members consisting of parents (7), teachers (4), students (2), the principal, an assistant principal, one UFT representative, one non-teacher employee, and one alumnus, and are the primary vehicle for parents to work with teachers and the principal to establish school priorities, and evaluate a school’s progress.

The fundamental purpose of the SLT is to determine the school’s educational direction – that is its goals and priorities, the strategies that will be used to achieve that vision, and the alignment of resources to accomplish those strategies....{click here to continue reading}...

Parent - To - Parent  Night
by Ratna Sircar, Ph.D.
(from January 2004 Newsletter)

When parents and their children are involved in the college process, questions such as “What do colleges look for in an application?” and “What extracurricular activities should my child be involved with?” and “How do I know what is a good fit for my child?” keep coming up. To answer some these questions, the Parents’ Association of Bronx Science organizes a Parent-to-Parent College Night. The evening starts with a meet-and-greet session in the school cafeteria where current parents informally interact with parent alums. At the main event held in the school auditorium, panelists give a brief presentation, highlighting one or two issues that most impacted their child’s college admission process. This is followed by parallel question and answer sessions, by grade, in individual classrooms. Last year’s event was attended by over 200 parents. Following are some of the important points made by the panelists:
  • Parents must be “informed consumers.”
  • The whole admissions process is an emotionally stressful one. Start early.
  • In the junior year, students and their parents should accumulate as much information as possible about colleges so that the process is less stressful in the senior year.
  • Identifying your child’s strengths, and weaknesses, will help you and your child make realistic choices in college selection.
  • “Safety schools” must be viable options—ones where the student would receive challenging courses and be willing to go—not schools that are below the student’s qualifications. Check calendars and the school Website to find out when this spring’s Parent-to-Parent College Night will be held.
