BUDGET CUTS - ALL PARENTS SHOULD CALL 311
Dear Bronx Science parents,
Your help is urgently needed to avert budget cuts to our school. As you
may have heard on the news, Bronx Science and other top-performing
schools are slated for cuts of as much as 6% next year. For Bronx
Science, this would mean a reduction of over $800,000. These
proposed cuts far outstrip the worst-case scenario Principal Reidy was
planning for could affect class offerings and much more that we take
for granted will have to go if they are implemented. But we can
stop this, read on for details.
The State "kept their promise" and budgeted the $600 million it had it
had agreed to fund the City’s schools as part of the settlement of the
Campaign for Fiscal Equity suit, but the City has proposed to cut $450
million of the $600 million they agreed to fund as part of the
settlement. How can these cuts be justified? Chancellor
Klein blames the State for requiring that a portion (up to half) of
this new State funding go primarily to low-performing schools; he
claims that if DOE could distribute these funds equitably, all schools
would see a 1.4% reduction in their operating budget next year.
What he is not saying is that there would be no need for any cuts if
the city were to fulfill its own commitment to match the State in fully
funding the schools. It is the city’s taking away the $450
million it promised the schools, not the State requiring that a portion
of the additional $600 million go to low-performing schools, that
translates into drastic cuts at schools like Bronx Science.
The truth is that there is no excuse for any school to see budget cuts
next year. If the city kept its promise to match the State's $600
Million, all schools would see an increase. NYC’s Independent Budget
Office has projected a surplus of $4.6 billion this year, and surpluses
for at least two years after that. We understand fiscal
responsibility means looking at the long-term and not robbing the
future, but depriving current students of the resources they need for a
quality education is robbing our own future. It will decrease the
quality of life in the City and diminish the City’s attractiveness as a
center of business, industry and culture.
Call and write Mayor Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn
and you City Council member. Include in your message to the Mayor and
City Council: " Keep the commitment to CFE, restore full funding
for education in the NYC budget. Prioritize our children's education,
don't break your promise. Stop the $450 Million dollar cut. Thank
you.”
Call: 311 to leave message for Mayor Bloomberg; City Council Speaker
Quinn at 212-788-7210.

Parent Volunteer to be Web Master.
My last child
at Bronx Science has graduated and we need someone to keep this web
page going. It's fairly straightforward and instruction will be
provided. Work closely with PA presidents and executive board. No
experience required, just general computer confidence, know how and
desire to do the job.
Bronx
Science Students and their Families know this school better than
anyone.
Please share your
best ideas about aspects of the school and/or your student's
experience that could be improved in the coming year by filling out this
form.
The results of this informal year-end survey will be made available to
the school community in September.
The PA reserves
the right, without recourse, to edit out any comments determined to to

Wanted:
Mentors
As more schools
participate in Intel, the competition for mentors gets tougher
>>> Can your lab or university mentor a Bronx
Science student? <<<
Each year about 80 students enter the Bronx Science research program, a
3-year sequence that provides motivated kids with in-depth experience
doing research. After a year spent reading professional papers in
their area of interest and learning basic research techniques, the
students select a topic for a long-term project.
We need your help finding great mentors for about 20 sophomores now
embarking on their research. Physical science and biology students need
access to sophisticated labs and dynamite scientists; they commit to
working two summers at the mentor's institution. High quality
social science and math mentors are also in demand.
Got ideas? Contacts? Email or call Dr. Jean Donahue at

and for help with collges. All students have accounts and parents
have access also either through your child's account or (limited) as a
guest. Your child should have information on how you can access Naviance.
